Who prints this

Three people, two ink drums and an odd name

Facialesthe Survey is written in a shared print studio on the second floor of a Gastown building. We play, argue, proof and print, mostly in the evenings after our day jobs.

Where the name comes from

In art school, Margaux ran a riso zine called Facialesthe, a squashed-together “facial aesthetics” that was meant as a joke about judging everything by its face. Each issue surveyed something ordinary purely by how it looked at first glance: bus shelters, cereal boxes, the loading screens of phone games.

When the three of us started writing about browser games, the old title fitted surprisingly well. A game’s first screen is its face, and the pink pass judges exactly that. The word “survey” stands for the second, slower look, the one that checks whether the face was honest. Nothing here concerns skin care, and we are not a salon, though we do get the occasional email asking.

Paid for by posters, not by games

Cards go to print without any studio or platform seeing them first, and a spot on the sheet is not for sale. We may receive a referral fee for some outbound visits, which never changes the order. The studio rent and the paper are paid for by our printing work for local bands and cafés.

The studio

Who does what

  • Margaux Lévesque

    Publisher, first impressions

Grew up in Trois-Rivières, moved west for a design degree and stayed for the rain. Margaux plays nearly every pink pass, because she has the least patience of the three and that makes her a fair stand-in for a tired stranger.

  • Theo Brannigan

The slow round and the device drawer

A bike courier turned print technician who owns too many old phones. Theo runs most blue passes, logs battery and heat, and is the reason every game here has been played one-handed on a cracked screen.

  • Anjali Rao

Proofs, post tray and policy pages

Works in records management by day, which explains the cookie ledger. Anjali checks every fact on a card against the CrazyGames page, answers reader notes and keeps our privacy and terms pages honest.
